Sustainability is what we do

For us, sustainability and responsibility (S&R) is simply the right thing to do. It’s about giving back more than we take – and doing so in a sensible and caring way. That, for us, is just common sense, which means S&R is ingrained in everything we do, from grain to glass.

Our guiding principle

Our sustainability and responsibility strategy is a simple mantra: Good Times from a Good Place – something our founders strived to do from the moment they started distilling in the 1800s.

Since then, we’ve built on their foundation to create iconic brands that reach far beyond the bar – helping to make a positive impact on our planet and the lives of the people they touch, harnessing the power of human connection to create moments of conviviality that make a real difference.

Ultimately our strategy is about creating good times from a good place – the clear call to action that’s been running through our business for more than 230 years.

Responsib’All Day

For one day of the year everyone downs tools to come together and focus on our S&R activities by volunteering in their local communities. Responsib’All Day has been a main event in our calendar since 2011, allowing teammates to reflect on our S&R goals and give back, while demonstrating our resolve to make a positive difference to people and the planet.

In 2022, we set out to boost biodiversity. Teams visited sites across Scotland and London and got stuck into activities to support nature, such as planting and introducing wildflowers, weeding invasive species of plants and helping with wetland conservation.

Thinking outside the box

Since September 2022 we’ve started to phase out the cardboard carton that housed our flagship Chivas 12 whisky. Instead, the distinctive bottle is standing proud by itself on the shelves of our retailers. We’ve also redesigned the Chivas 12 bottle, reducing its weight, which will save approximately 1,300 tonnes of glass per year.

We’ve launched Chivas RETHINK, our new sustainability platform, which shines a light on the brand’s environmental efforts.
