Plymouth Gin® has been awarded first place in the Martini category of the prestigious World Cocktail Championships. With its carefully hand-picked botanicals and small team of local makers, Plymouth, which once inspired the original dry martini, has now been celebrated as the world’s best martini beating off competition from around the globe.

Plymouth Gin’s Master Distiller, Sean Harrison, searches the world every year for the highest quality botanicals from independent farmers that stay true to the original recipe. These are taken back to his small team of artisan makers based at the brand’s home, the oldest working gin distillery in the UK. The array of botanicals used are juniper, angelica root, lemon peel, green cardamom, orange peel, coriander seed, and orris root. These seven natural, hand-selected botanicals provide a full bodied yet smooth gin with fresh citrus and gentle green spiced top notes, making it ideal for a spirituous cocktail like the martini.

With over 200 years of heritage, Plymouth has remained a mainstay in cocktail books throughout the decades and was included in the original recipe for the dry martini, making it a gin of choice for bartenders. Fast-forward to 2018 and the recipe that clinched the win at the Championships called for two parts Plymouth Gin, three-fourths part Noilly Prat Vermouth.

“The Gin Hub was born last year so that we could focus on our world-renowned brands and driving growth of the gin category worldwide, and it’s great to see Plymouth and its team of local makers being recognised on this global level. Its gentle and complex flavour profile has remained a favourite among bartenders worldwide as the ideal gin for cocktails. Plymouth and the martini have a long history together and we’re proud to see this continuing.” said Karen Ehrlich, Global Brand Director, Plymouth Gin.

The World Cocktail Championships is a blind tasting, medal-based competition. Cocktails are judged by's trained staff joined by top cocktail professionals and buyers from bars and restaurants using a proven, consistent, methodology developed in collaboration with Cornell University. Results are shared with consumers and trade monthly.
